Job Description
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is seeking a Project Coordinator to support a wide range of environmental health programs. The role helps manage project workflows, organize tasks, and assist with major initiatives that impact public health. This position supports internship programs, workforce development, environmental health topics, and national awareness efforts.
The work is fast-paced and meaningful. You will help coordinate projects that involve topics such as food safety, vector-borne disease, water quality, air quality, land reuse, lead safety, climate change, and Health in All Policies. The position also offers opportunities to travel, collaborate with experts, and support national training sessions.
This role suits someone with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a passion for environmental health. You will help develop proposals, coordinate events, build partnerships, manage data, and support day-to-day project execution.
Position Overview
The Project Coordinator supports environmental health programs by managing timelines, organizing tasks, and helping deliver high-quality work. The role includes writing, communication, and project planning. It also includes supporting project teams that work across multiple environmental health areas.
This role requires flexibility and strong coordination skills. You will work with stakeholders, subject matter experts, partners, and funders. You will also support program content, educational materials, event planning, and technical assistance.
Travel may be required a few times per year to support conferences, training sessions, and partner meetings. Sometimes work may be needed during evenings or weekends based on project deadlines. A passport may be necessary for select assignments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Project Coordination
As Project Coordinator, you will handle daily project activities and help keep everything on track. Tasks include:
- Managing timelines and monitoring task progress.
- Coordinating in-person and virtual trainings.
- Tracking costs and managing project scopes.
- Facilitating meetings, focus groups, and working sessions.
- Preparing content for progress reports and final reports.
- Coordinating communication with project participants.
- Supporting the team during events and project cycles.
You will help ensure tasks move on time and align with funder and program expectations.
Project and Program Development
The role involves supporting program growth and development. Responsibilities include:
- Helping prepare proposals, budgets, and narratives.
- Coordinating program committees and resource development.
- Building partnerships with universities, agencies, and experts.
- Supporting articles, chapters, and educational publications.
- Helping plan webinars and training sessions.
- Managing updates for department webpages.
- Creating horizon scans and literature reviews.
- Developing presentations and sharing findings.
This part of the work supports long-term impact and helps expand environmental health education.
Data Evaluation and Research Support
The role includes supporting project evaluation and research activities. You will:
- Help develop surveys and data collection tools.
- Assist teams with evaluation tasks and research needs.
- Collect, organize, and summarize program data.
- Support writing reports and creating summaries.
- Maintain data libraries and evaluation files.
This helps ensure programs remain accurate, measurable, and useful for communities.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide support for project communication and documentation.
- Contribute writing for newsletters, reports, or educational materials.
- Assist during conferences and events.
- Support team members with general project tasks.
- Complete other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Education and Experience
Applicants should have a strong background in public health or environmental health. Requirements include:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Biology, Environmental Health, Public Health, or related Science fields.

- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Strong organization and time management.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust quickly.
Preferred or helpful experience includes:
- Experience in non-profit or government settings.
- Experience with grant writing or grant management.
- Experience in public health or environmental health programs.

$55,000 – $65,000 per year
